Delivering engagement for mobile populations


The Challenge:

With a rich program design, including attractive incentives, why is our engagement low?

This was the question Alyfe faced when their energy distribution client came to them in 2018. Asking the right questions allowed us to reach their true goals. Here’s what we found out:

● Half of their population does not work in an office environment.

● Travel burdens, long shifts, and physical labor creates high levels of stress.

● Most of the population is older, male, with a high rate of chronic conditions. We needed to get them, and their spouses, engaged with lifestyle changes.

● Past programs were focused on what employees “had” to do which gave the program a negative feeling.

● Having engagement and encouragement from leadership was important, but we needed fresh ideas to get them involved.

● Creating a healthy culture, engagement because they “want” to participate, and overall job satisfaction was the ultimate goal.

The Solution:

Alyfe was able to create a long-term strategic plan that promoted well-being through a variety of engagement opportunities that gave employees a choice and fit into their demanding schedules. By increasing participation, engaging leadership and encouraging grass-roots support, the foundation for a strong culture of health is in place!

The Results:

We are seeing significant increases in engagement and overall positive lifestyle risk trends:

● Field employees had an 8% increase in biometric screening participation.

● For those employees and spouses who were eligible for lifestyle coaching, we saw a 73% increase in participation

● We saw a 110% increase in the completion of coaching to earn their incentive.

● A reduction in lifestyle risks across both employees and spouses looked like this:

Engagement highlights of how we affected this challenging population:

A Healthy start

● New hires now receive an introduction to the well-being program, incentive design, and well-being resources.

● We created a “lunch box” for truck drivers that includes a booklet of healthy lunch ideas and provided resources for common restaurants to help drivers make healthy choices while on the road.

KNOW YOUR NUMBERS, and SO MUCH MORE

● Screenings took place during safety meetings to not only make the connection with a supportive culture, but also convenience.

● We also provide weekend events, medical provider forms, and Labcorp vouchers for spouses and employees on the road.

Take the challenge

● Challenges have always been popular with this population— a little competitiveness and fun!

● The client purchased Fitbits for all employees and during orientation, all new hires receive a Fitbit.

● Specific to drivers, encouraged steps around your rig contests.

● Additional incentives include raffles for gift cards, new shoes and wellness days off.

Get coached

● To increase engagement in coaching, provided an opt-in approach at onsite biometrics.

● Alyfe also included outbound calls to those eligible.


The culture of health is alive and well for this client, and we continue to enhance engagement strategies to reach their population. We are proud to be their long-term partner!

Upcoming culture of health plans include culture assessments at various locations, encouraging more local champions in combination with safety, and leadership toolkits.
