How We Show Up

Emotions are a part of every moment of our lives and a powerful force behind guiding what we do. Every interaction that we have is influenced by our emotional strength and flexibility, both in our personal life and at work. Now that the lines of home and work have been blurred, paying attention to emotional support is essential to creating strong workforces.

To successfully create a workplace culture that encourages expression of emotions, we need to work together to remove the myth that emotions don’t belong in the workplace. Employees are looking for opportunities to express their emotions and have employers support their development of emotional fitness.

Key Components of Emotional Fitness

Emotional Strength:

Emotional Strength is seen in the swift transition from emotional situation to situation. The goal is to be able to move from one emotional state to the other without getting bogged down.

Emotional Flexibility:

Emotionally Flexibility refers to not being locked in a rigid way of responding. Instead, possessing a broad spectrum of dynamic tools and responses to be used in a variety of emotional situations.

The Power of Emotions

Our emotional strength and flexibility allow us to harness the positive emotions to propel individuals and teams forward. Negative unresolved emotions lead to group anger, fear, lack of commitment, poor performance and high turnover.

Value of Emotional Fitness in the Workplace

Employees are working in progressively complex and competitive environments. Employees and organizations often experience a great deal of pressure to achieve more with fewer resources. Creating a supportive environment where employees feel valued and heard, will support the common goals of the organization and keep everyone moving in the same direction.

Being competitive in the market means increasing productivity, problem-solving for new approaches and greater flexibility, collaboration, and a positive atmosphere. To establish strong business results, organizations have to empathize with their employees while managing complex, overloaded workdays. From manufacturing to education to transportation industries, emotional well-being skills are increasingly seen as essential and strategic for organizations to retain top talent and produce results.
