What's your "why" ? – Kay Lakhi
Unlike animals, which are driven simply to survive, we humans crave more from life than mere survival. Without answering the question, ‘Survival for the sake of what?,’ we can quickly become distracted and filled with a quiet sense of despair. There is an alarming increase in the rates of drug and alcohol abuse, depression, and suicide. Likewise, a quick glance at employee engagement statistics points to a crisis of purpose and meaning on an unprecedented scale. Though we may be wealthier today than at any time in history, there is clearly a marked difference between ‘well off’ and ‘well-being.’
What gives your life purpose and meaning?
Every day decisions are made based on what we think about ourselves and the world around us. We are often motivated by something greater than ourselves, which ignites a fire within us and drives our decisions…the power of our why.
Throughout the year we will be highlighting one Alyfe team member to find out more about their “why” and what inspires them.
Kay Lakhi, Founder/President, Alyfe Wellbeing Strategies and Dietary Solutions
What drives your life choices and makes you come alive?
When you are working toward things that inspire you, it literally makes you feel more alive… I’m talking about a why that moves up the food chain from being about you, to being about something bigger than you. It’s about connecting with what you’re passionate about and focusing your attention on endeavors that put a fire in your belly.
I grew up loving food and nutrition and have fond memories of my father teaching me to cook when I was little. I followed my love of nutrition into the field of dietetics and started my career in long-term health care. I witnessed the slow deterioration of the health of our elderly and realized it was happening at younger and younger ages! I wanted to make a difference in the health of my community and affect well-being before it got to the point of no return.
As a minority woman who left India to create a life I wanted, I am very passionate about helping other women by supporting educational opportunities for women and standing for women’s rights throughout the world. I blended my passions and built companies that employ predominantly women; offering flexible work schedules that allow them to take care of themselves and their families—whether their children, parents or grandparents. I believe that life is about touching the lives of people around us and going out of our way to help and love others. Sometimes all it takes is one simple gesture to put a smile on someone’s face and make them feel less alone.
What are your innate strengths?
Your element is the point at which natural talent and skill meets personal passion. When people are in their element they are not only more productive, but they add more value and enjoy more personal and professional fulfilment.
I love connecting with different people and building relationships. I would say I am resilient and have the ability to not let things overwhelm me in life.
What makes you passionate about Alyfe and motivates you to come to work each day?
My entire career has been led by my desire to make a difference in people’s lives. True happiness is when you appreciate all the people in your life and help everyone around you. I take that attitude with me to work every day and am grateful to be a part of a company with a mission that revolves around helping others live a better life.
How will you measure your life?
People who don’t stand for something, can easily fall for anything. Deciding how you want to measure your life means making a stand for something and then living your life in alignment with it.
By the people in my life—that have impacted me as much as I hope I have impacted them. I want to make as many happy memories as I can with as many different people as possible. That is what we should live for, because when we’re gone from this world, we can’t take anything with us. All that’s left are the people whose lives you touched, and the difference you’ve made while you were here. Make this life count, because you don’t get a second chance.
If you had to write a personal mission statement that inspires you to create the life that you want, what would it be?
“Drop It”. Sometimes we need to evaluate our lives and take stock of what is truly important and not stress over the rest. If everyone could follow that advice and let things go, our lives would be lot simpler and richer.
What’s YOUR “Why?”
Do this exercise for yourself; answer the above questions to find out your personal why. Only when you know your “why”, will you find the courage to take the risks needed to get ahead, stay motivated and move your life onto an entirely new, more challenging and rewarding trajectory.
“He who has a why can endure any how.” – Friedrich Nietzshce (German Philosopher)
Alyfe is what happens when you find the “y” in life.
It’s living to the fullest.
It’s the endless pursuit of well-being.
It’s the path to your true potential.
It’s Alyfe. Well Lived.
That’s the promise of Alyfe.
