cigarette with stethescopePhysical Wellbeing: The ability to maintain a healthy quality of life that allows us to get through our daily activities without undue fatigue or physical stress. Physical health is connected to mental and emotional health. Taking care of your body is a powerful first step towards mental and emotional health, the mind and the body are linked. When you improve your physical health, you will automatically experience greater mental and emotional wellbeing.  The ability to recognize that our behaviors have a significant impact on our wellness and adopting healthful habits (routine check-ups, a balanced diet, exercise, etc.) while avoiding destructive habits (tobacco, drugs, alcohol, etc.) will lead to optimal Physical Wellbeing.

Physical Wellbeing:  A state of physical wellbeing is not just the absence of disease.  It includes lifestyle behavior choices to ensure health, avoid preventable diseases and conditions, and to live in a balanced state of body, mind, and spirit.  Optimal physical wellness is developed through the combination of beneficial physical activity/exercise and healthy eating habits.

No matter how you define it, the benefits of feeling your best physically often lead to the psychological benefits of higher self-esteem, self-control, determinations and a sense of direction.  Being physically fit can also help to prevent early illness, disability or premature death

So…how do you achieve it?

Keep your body moving — In order to reap the benefits of physical wellbeing, it’s important to keep your body strong and active.  Exercise also helps to relieve stress and lift your mood. It is a powerful antidote to stress, anxiety, and depression. Look for small ways to add activity to your day, like taking the stairs instead of the elevator or going on a short walk. It is recommended that you try and get 30 minutes of exercise a day for at least 5 days per week.

Eat well —  Food is essential to keep the body going and remain strong. Developing good nutrition habits is crucial. Eating fruits and vegetables is important, as is eating breakfast every day. Learn about good nutrition and practice it. The subject of nutrition is complicated and not always easy to put into practice. You will feel better if you learn about what you eat, how it affects your energy and mood, and practice healthy eating habits.

Sleep well — Inadequate sleep, excess studying, socializing, and working may lead to poor sleep habits and stress. Lack of sleep may cause memory problems and the inability to concentrate.  It is recommended that you get eight hours of sleep a night.

Physical Wellbeing — it’s really just about having good health and enough energy to get things done on a daily basis.
