Addressing policy changes to help employee wellbeing

The following are some guidelines on policies that can align messaging with your wellbeing goals.

Flexible work hours with adequate vacation time: Provide employees the freedom to schedule their work hours and the opportunity to destress completely. When employees have adequate vacation time and flexibility, they will be able to achieve day-to-day work-life balance and manage stress in a more sustained manner.

Tobacco use prohibition: Ban smoking during work hours. This policy not only supports smokers in their efforts to quit smoking, but also sends a strong message to non-smokers that the company cares about protecting them from second hand smoke.

Open-door Policy: An open-door policy is essential to resolving human resource problems at the earliest and ensuring a harmonious work culture. Make employees aware of the policy and encourage them, without judgement to take advantage of it when they face challenges at work.

Healthy food options: Whether it is a lunch meeting or a company celebration, opt for an array of vegetables, fruits, cheeses and lean meats instead of the popular pizza. Shift to a healthier vending machine and change the cafeteria menu to a healthy one.

The above policies are only guidelines. Many companies are beginning to experiment with innovative policies and finding success in their implementation. For example, at Hasbro, every Friday is a half day and everyone takes a break between Christmas and New Year. About.com provides pet insurance to its employees. Dell provides emergency back-up care for dependents of employees. The possibilities are endless!
